Gary P. Henson, CFA, CFP®, Chief Investment Officer
As the chief investment officer, Gary is responsible for the oversight of all investment related functions at Mariner.
Gary comes to Mariner from the Country Club Trust Company (CCTC), where he managed over $1 billion in institutional and high net worth client portfolios and relationships. During his tenure there, he developed a tactical asset allocation model using exchange‐traded funds (ETFs).
Prior to joining CCTC he was portfolio manager for FB Capital Management of Kansas, a $2 billion insurance and farming consortium. While there, he managed $1.5 billion in fixed income and $250 million in equities. He also served as consultant to the Kansas State University Foundation, and helped form FB Capital’s initial hedge fund.
Gary’s initial duties in the investment and banking community were with Central Bancompany, based out of Jefferson City, Missouri, where he managed the bank’s assets, trading desk, and portfolios--both individual and institutional.
Gary holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri. He is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). The CFA designation is the most rigorous and globally accepted professional standard in the investment industry. Gary sits on the board of Republic Capital Access, a specialist in financing government contracts.
Scott A. Moore, CFA; CIO—Mariner Value Strategies
Scott is the Chief Investment Officer and lead portfolio manager for all products within Mariner Value Strategies. Scott has 18 years of investment experience and 10 years of portfolio management experience using a classic value approach.
Scott joined Mariner from American Century Investments where he managed approximately $10 billion in institutional, intermediary, and mutual funds assets. During his ten year portfolio management tenure at ACI (1999‐2008), he was the lead manager of the 5‐Star rated American Century Mid Cap Value Fund, and co‐manager of the 5‐Star rated American Century Equity Income Fund and 4‐Star rated American Century Value Fund*.
Prior to becoming a portfolio manager at ACI, Scott was an investment analyst at ACI (1996‐1999) specializing in the Telecommunications, Utility, and Industrial sectors. Scott also worked at Boatmen’s Trust Company in St. Louis as an investment analyst from 1995‐1996, and at ACI as a fixed income investment analyst from 1993‐1995.
Scott holds an MBA with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, and a Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in Finance from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois. He achieved the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1994. The CFA designation is the most rigorous and globally accepted professional standard in the investment industry.

Kenneth A. Powell, CFA, Chief Equity Strategist
Ken holds a bachelor of science degree majoring in finance from Southern Illinois University. He has also obtained the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, the most rigorous and globally accepted professional standard in the investment industry.
Ken began his investment career with Mid‐States Corporate Federal Credit Union in 1989, located in Naperville, Illinois. In 1991, he joined Boatmen’s Trust Company in Kansas City. At Boatmen’s and its successor, Bank of America, Ken was a Vice President and Portfolio Manager. He managed investment portfolios for individuals, trusts, and foundations.
In the year 2000, Ken joined Country Club Bank as a Senior Vice President and Senior Investment Manager in the Trust Department. At Country Club Bank, Ken managed equity and fixed income investment portfolios for individuals and institutions. He also managed the Trust Department’s equity common trust fund.
In 2002, Ken joined CFW Capital Management as Senior Vice President and portfolio manager. At CFW, Ken managed investment portfolios for high net‐worth individuals and foundations. His investment portfolio outperformed the corresponding benchmarks during his tenure there.
Ken is a member of the CFA Institute and the Kansas City Society of Financial Analysts. He is a board member for Children’s TLC and currently serves as Treasurer. He is also a board member for The Midwest Transplant Network.
Ted Conrad, Portfolio Manager—Mariner Alternative Asset Management
Ted has been a portfolio manager at Mariner since 2007. In that position, he manages Mariner’s internal hedge fund, the Mariner Statistical Opportunities Fund, which focuses on alternative investment styles such as statistical arbitrage, relative value fixed income and managed futures.
From 2006 to 2007, Mr.Conrad worked at Welton Investment Corporation in Carmel, California where he was a Senior Trader for its primary investment portfolio. At Welton, Mr. Conrad helped execute, research and design a managed futures program which traded in excess of $300 million in the global futures, options and foreign exchange markets.
From 2001 to 2006, Mr. Conrad worked at FB Capital Management in Manhattan, Kansas, where he served as a Senior Trader and Analyst for its hedge fund, Bountiful Trust. For Bountiful Trust, Mr. Conrad worked in several segments of alternative investment management including fixed‐income relative value arbitrage, statistical arbitrage, global macro and quantitative futures trading. In addition to trading, Mr. Conrad managed and co‐developed an automated trading system, which ultimately provided multi‐point connectivity to the electronic markets for Bountiful Trust.
Mr. Conrad holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Finance from Kansas State University. He also holds the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”) Series3 (Futures) and Series65 (Investment Advisor) Certifications.
David W Schulz, CFA, President—Mariner Quantitative Solutions
David is the president of Mariner Quantitative Solutions, and the former president and chief investment officer of M&I Investment Management Corporation, a $17 billion investment advisory. He was instrumental in forming proprietary mutual funds, securities lending, and asset allocation programs for the firm.
Schulz has patented one quantitative investment process, with another patent pending. Prior to 1993 he was Director of Fixed Income for M&I, and is a former Morningstar Five Star Manager.
Schulz holds a BBA in finance and accounting from the University of Wisconsin‐Madison. He is a member of the Security Analysts Society of Milwaukee, and a trustee of Cardinal StritchUniversity in Milwaukee.
David J. Abitz, CFA; CIO—Mariner Quantitative Solutions
With over 12 years of experience in the investment business at M&I Investment Management Corp, Mr. Abitz was appointed Manager of the Custom Quantitative Solutions Group in 2000. His responsibilities included management of the Marshall Equity Income Fund, Tax Efficient Portfolios, M&I High Dividend Income Portfolios and the M&I Long/Short Fund.
Prior responsibilities included work as a securities analyst and an equity trader. BBA from the University of Wisconsin –Oshkosh with Finance major and MBA from the University of Wisconsin –Madison. Member of the Society of Quantitative Analysts, the Chicago Quantitative Alliance group, and the security Analysts of San Francisco.
Katrina joined Mariner Wealth Advisors in 2007 as an investment analyst. In that position, she assists the lead manager in the oversight of the Mariner Tactical Allocation portfolio. She is also responsible for the development of quantitative models used for the Mariner investment strategies, as well as research and analysis of the fixed income portfolios.
Prior to joining Mariner, Katrina worked at Waddell & Reed as a Senior Performance Analyst. In that role she worked closely with the portfolio managers on various quantitative projects to assist in the investment management process. She was also responsible for performance and attribution analysis of the large cap equity and asset strategy products.
Katrina began her investment career in 2002 with FB Capital Management of Kansas in Manhattan, Kansas. At FB Capital she was a Senior Trader for Bountiful Trust, an internal $100 million hedge fund. Her responsibilities consisted of research and analysis in alternative asset classes including futures, options, and fixed income derivatives. Katrina also served as an intern for one year prior to joining FB Capital full time, where she performed research on the fixed income and equity portfolios under management.
